Project Name

"Development of Smart Ultrasonic Pest Control System for Post-Harvest Loss Reduction in Stored Paddy"

Sector & Possible Impacts: Bangladesh faces major challenges with paddy post-harvest loss due to pest and mold   infestation, which leads to poor quality of the stored grains, affecting germination percentage as well as food safety and nutritional security. Results found that the storage loss of paddy in Bangladesh is 7-12 % due to pest/insect infestation.  In Bangladesh the rice storage loss is found around 7-12% due to insect infestation. The proposed smart stored pest repellent system will be a hybrid model incorporated with innovative storage structure and ultrasonic pest control system. Innovative storage structure will create a modified atmospheric condition inside the storage and ultrasonic generator will generate the variable frequency which repel the pest from storage area. A basic electronic insect repellent circuit was designed and tested in the precision lab through a basic research. The circuit was designed utilizing existing electronic components. The circuit design is divided into five units: the power supply unit, input unit, frequency generator and voltage regulatory units, oscillator unit, and output unit. The designed circuit was tested and validated inside of glass chambers at the precision agricultural lab in the presence of paddy weevils in the grain. The developed ultrasonic repellent will align with industry best practices for efficient stored pest control. Moreover, the developed innovative storage structure will help the generate local entrepreneurship.
Goal : The goal of this project is to develop a sensor-based smart pest control system with appropriate storage structure for reduction of post-harvest loss of food grain which will contribute to country’s food and nutritional security.
